Effective June 1, 2009, all persons traveling by air, ship or rail,  outside the United States, including Mexico and Canada are now required to carry a valid US Passport to enter or re-enter the United States.  

United States citizens don’t need a U.S. visa for travel, but when planning travel abroad may need a visa issued by the embassy of the country they wish to visit.
